2017 update – please note that Indeed now requires some already existing web traffic before approval of your publisher account. That means they might not accept a site that is completely new. Moderately established websites are approved easily. We are working hard to develop and integrate also other provider’s feeds.
The SJS Indeed plugin is a useful asset that helps to gather jobs content, attract new visitors and complement existing database jobs. Let’s take a look how to configure and set it up step by step. Tutorial consists of 3 sections.
1. Connect Indeed account
a) Use an existing or sign up for Indeed Publisher account at https://secure.indeed.com/account/register. Get the Publisher ID and save it in the Admin -> Indeed page.
2. Configure Indeed
When we open indeed.com we can see that Indeed expects users to enter at least the location of the job query that is being searched. All results are associated with a specific location. The SJS Indeed plugin therefore works the same way and users have to specify the location. It is not possible to pull and display jobs from multiple countries at the same time. But it is possible to list all of the countries and cities, pull and display the jobs for each location respectively. For example you can get jobs for every state in the United States or jobs for different cities across the country. Down below we will demonstrate this in a setup example.
a) Indeed plugin needs two mandatory fields. Set the default city and country. City and country cannot be different, if you setup a country to “us” and city to “Paris” it will not work as it is in contradiction. City has to be located within the country. City can be in form of a postal code or a “city, state/province/region” combination. Country needs to be a two letter country code (eg. “uk”, “us”). All country codes can be seen here. If you want to add more countries and cities you can do so in the Admin -> Indeed -> Manage Search settings.
b) In addition to the required fields city and country there are few optional ones. You can target a specific industry job segment and specify the roles within a unique niche. This can be done by the query field. When left empty, plugin will pull non-specific job results. When you enter a specific query e.g. “Web Developer”, “Medical Intern”, “Customer Support” it will return results in your niche, relevant only to the selected term. Easiest method how to find correct Indeed settings for your job board is to first open indeed.com/advanced_search and test your searches directly with Indeed. Search for your niche and location. Are there any jobs in the segment? Test out different search queries and once you find the right combination, simply apply the same search settings into the job board. This way you can pull the exact job search results.
c) There are 3 modes of the job board. You can display:
# only database jobs – default mode. Jobs can be searched from the landing page, main searchbar & sidebar filters. Next screenshot shows 3 ways how users can search for jobs in the job board.
# only Indeed jobs – jobs can be searched from the landing page, main searchbar & sidebar filters. Specify the locations (+ job types and cities) in the Admin -> Indeed -> Manage Search page. These fields will appear in the landing page dropdown and sidebar filter sections. You can choose which fields will appear in the landing page dropdown – either countries or cities (setting shown on the image below).
# both database & Indeed jobs – database jobs will be listed & searched with a higher priority and Indeed jobs will serve as a back-filling content. When doing the landing page and main searchbar search both job types will be queried. Here you have to bear in mind a fact that your database jobs locations might have a different structure than Indeed has. To help Indeed match your database jobs better follow the next simple rule:
If your database locations are used as countries (us, uk, au etc.) in the Indeed settings set the Homepage dropdown search to “Countries”. If your database locations are setup as cities, set the setting to “Cities”. The default Indeed locations and database locations should be coming from the same country. This will ensure that when users do a search they will get the best and most precise results from both your website and Indeed at the same time.
With this mode activated Sidebar filters search only for the database jobs. After reading our guide we recommend to test it out and get familiar how Indeed plugin works in action.
3. Indeed configuration use case
Now when we know the basic rules let’s configure Indeed plugin to display design [replace with your niche] jobs in the United States [do not want a specific niche? Leave the “Query” field empty], United Kingdom and Australia [replace with your locations]. We want to specifically target the US area hence we will also create the sidebar filter list of several major cities. We assume that Indeed Publisher account and key already exist.
First, let’s assume we have a fresh job board wihout any content. In this case it would be useful to activate the “Indeed only jobs” mode and start displaying advertisements from the very beginning. Later once we create our own database job ads we can switch the mode and display both types of jobs. Indeed settings screenshot can be seen below.
After activating the plugin we specified a niche query, default job type [available options from Indeed API are: “temporary”, “internship”, “contract”, “parttime” and “fulltime”] and a job creation date [jobs posted within the last month]. In the second step let’s setup the sidebar filters. Click on “Manage Search” button to change the fields.
Country settings has been setup as:
On the left side there is a title that will be shown in the sidebar filters. On the right there is a country code in a format specified by Indeed documentation. City settings has been setup as:
On the right side you can see two different city location formats – a postcode and a standard city name. Final result in the job board will be similar as shown on the following image:
In the landing page users can search the locations that have been created.
Users can also search any type of a query interactively with instant results.
Over the time when there is more content in the job board the mode can be easily switched as shown on the next screenshot:
Last image demonstrates a search query with the new mode activated. Both database and Indeed jobs are being queried at the same time.
After reading the guide users should be familiar how to use the SJS Indeed plugin and it’s features. The plugin can help to populate your job board with content and provide your end-users with an ability to access a wide range of jobs all over the world. This extension can be downloaded from our SJS Indeed plugin page.
